The Difference You Can Make

Nitrogen pollution is the greatest threat to the health of the bodies of water in Southampton. Nitrogen causes harmful algal blooms (HABs), low dissolved oxygen, and bacterial contamination leading to marine death and beach closures. The largest source of nitrogen is from older septic systems that were not designed to filter out nitrogen and other nutrients from wastewater before releasing it into groundwater.

Southampton Town residents are eligible for combined government grants (Town and County/State) of up to $30,000 to install an Innovative and Alternative Onsite Wastewater Treatment System (I/A OWTS). This is a new type of septic system with state-of-the-art technologies that significantly improves treatment by removing nitrogen and other nutrients from wastewater.
